A Journey to Success: Supporting Refugees to Thrive in Lambeth

Earlier last year, Anya, a Ukrainian national, was referred to Lambeth Sanctuary Services for employment and training support. Before relocating to the UK, Anya had built an extensive career in customer service roles across multiple countries, including Ukraine, Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Turkey, within the transportation and travel industries.

After moving to the UK, she worked as an Office Co-Ordinator for the Lewisham and Lambeth Refugee Resettlement Programme. However, when her contract ended, she turned to Lambeth Sanctuary Services for assistance.

Tailored Support for New Opportunities

While receiving support, Anya was provided with personalised services, including CV updates, job search assistance, and soft skills training. Alongside her employment journey, Anya faced housing challenges when her host family could no longer accommodate her. Lambeth Council’s dedicated support services connected her with Ukrainian aid organisations and provided guidance to help her navigate these difficulties.

Despite the pressures of her situation, Anya remained resilient and focused. Her determination paid off when she successfully secured an interview with Ingeus, leading to a Site Co-Ordinator role. In this position, she now oversees the coordination of attendees for appointments and meetings.

A Testament to Strength and Collaboration

Through this process, Anya’s confidence and self-esteem grew significantly. Reflecting on her experience, Anya shared:

“For me, London is a very big city, and I felt like I was losing myself here, so far away from home with a completely different culture and language. I felt very depressed. After receiving support, I felt stronger and more confident right away! This CV will be a lucky step towards my new opportunities. Thank you for your help and guidance!”

Anya’s success story is a powerful reminder of the importance of persistence and the impact of community-focused support in helping individuals rebuild their lives in a new environment.
