Quotes from Higgs apprentices

My apprenticeship has been good so far; I’ve only been on it for about a month now since I finished my course with flying colours. I did environmental health awareness, working at height level, CSCS labour, health & safety and more. The role in the apprenticeship has been good, I’ve been learning different skills every day, a lot of sweeping to get rid of the hazards like dust, checking fire extinguishers, spraying out the pedestrian walkway giving people an idea of where to go if they get lost around the site. I’ve also done a stencil where I had to cut out two arrows for directions, which shows you where to go. I learnt how to use the water vacuum to drain out water. It’s mainly just health & safety procedures, using your initiative to figure out what’s a dangerous hazard to avoid any work accidents. Its good cause I’ve met knew people and the routine of waking up early for the job is challenging but am working with it, and I have been here on time everyday so far, I haven’t been late once. It’s making me more productive and more positive, so yea I will keep it up.

So far, it’s been brilliant, this is my fifth week now and it’s been great. A lot of good management for our team and learning little bits and pieces everyday as we go along. I think working in a good team is the best experience so far because it is quite a hard physical job but when you’ve got good team workers around you, that makes it a bit easier. I’m a Lambeth resident, this is my hometown really, so I was born and bred here, I’ve been living here most of my life and I literally live just across the road from this site.

I’ve been here for four months now since January; it was a great opportunity for me to qualify as an electrician apprentice. I am doing quite well and learning a lot of skills at work that are quite useful such as wiring, snagging, preparing cables and other materials that would be needed during the day and generally giving assistance to the senior electricians. Before this I was in college, I finished level 3 back in 2019 but unfortunately, I didn’t continue as an apprentice or work for over one year because it was during covid-19. So, yea I decided to start now again to finish my qualification as an electrician.

— Brhane Hagos (Electrician)

I’ve been on my apprenticeship since February this year, personally the best experience I’ve had so far to be fair is overall everything I do on the job while am here, constantly learning new skills that I can add to my knowledge, so it’s definitely a good thing for me. This apprenticeship is an amazing opportunity for someone like me because I wasn’t fully qualified, so it was just about crossing that line. So, yea I’ve learnt a lot here and am newly qualified, so it’s an amazing opportunity and I would advise it to anyone else. I probably found this role on Indeed, it’s a walking distance from where I live which is quite convenient for me, so am hoping to stay on with this company once I complete my apprenticeship and continue moving up the ladder.

I’ve been on this apprenticeship for over one year and 3 months now, I would say working on this site has been the best experience for me so far on this job. I’m learning different skills that could be added to my resume such as setting tiles on walls, taking down bad brickwork to fix it, snagging and much more.
