In August, 17 young residents of Lambeth embarked on an inspiring journey as part of the Lambeth Made Contractor Challenge (LMCC). This mutually beneficial programme offered young people an invaluable opportunity to explore careers and local opportunities in the construction industry while providing contractors with a framework to deliver meaningful community commitments. The 2024 edition marked the third and most successful year of LMCC, delivering exceptional outcomes for participants and the community.
Spotlight on Success: Kirell’s Story
Kirell, a Lambeth resident, faced significant challenges after disengaging from his college course. Despite his interest in bricklaying, he lacked the confidence and connections to pursue his passion. Enrolled in the LMCC, Kirell received personalised support through employability sessions, site visits, and a transformative “What Employers Want” workshop.
A standout moment came during a multi-employer “Live Vacancies” event, where Kirell showcased his skills and commitment. His performance caught the attention of a bricklaying apprenticeship provider, leading to an interview. With the LMCC team’s help—including mock interview practice and a bursary for professional attire—Kirell secured the apprenticeship. Today, he is thriving in his new role, launching a career in a field he’s passionate about.
Looking Ahead
We remain committed to expanding the LMCC’s reach and impact. With continued collaboration and innovation, we aim to empower even more young people to build bright futures.
Participant Reflection: “The LMCC exposed me to so many employment and work experience opportunities, allowing me to explore my interests in more detail.” – LMCC 2024 Participant
