From Creative Passion to Career Stability
George is a talented and creative individual with a passion for performing and writing. Through the arts, he developed strong communication skills, confidence and a powerful sense of self-expression. However, after last working in bar work in 2022, he began looking for a more stable and sustainable career path.
Living with autism and anxiety, George has reflected on how to navigate these alongside his future goals. At times, workplace environments lacked the structure and flexibility he needed to thrive, making it difficult to build confidence and maintain momentum. Without tailored support, these challenges began to affect his progress.
Determined to move forward, George joined the Connect to Work programme delivered by Lambeth Council. From the outset, he showed commitment and resilience — attending regularly, arriving prepared and maintaining a positive mindset, even when the job search felt challenging.
With personalised, person-centred support, George gained a clearer understanding of recruitment processes and built confidence in both job applications and interviews. He also identified the importance of finding the right working environment — one that offers structure, guidance and understanding — enabling him to demonstrate his strengths in creativity, focus and problem-solving.
Practical support from the programme helped George break tasks into manageable steps, build routines and prepare for workplace expectations. Within just three months, he secured four job interviews — a significant milestone reflecting both his determination and progress.
A key part of George’s journey has been the trusting relationship he built with his Employment Specialist, helping him feel respected, understood and supported throughout the process.
“I feel heard. It doesn’t feel like I’m being spoken down to or misunderstood.”
Today, George approaches new opportunities with greater confidence, clarity and self-belief. He feels better equipped to manage challenges, ask for support when needed and stay focused on his goals.
Looking ahead, George is working towards securing stable employment that provides routine and long-term security, while continuing to nurture his creative ambitions. With another interview on the horizon, he is moving forward with optimism and confidence.
