Success Story

Bushra's story

Bushra was registered with Connecting Communities in November 2022, where her chosen vocation was to work in the customer service sector. She is a single parent and was a teaching professional in Pakistan, but despite having considerable qualifications in her home country; lacked any formal qualifications in the UK.

We had undertaken several IAG sessions, focusing on her professional objectives and would apply for various roles and respond to the IAG emails which were sent on a weekly basis. Bushra attended an online employability session relating to using LinkedIn for job search, where she used LinkedIn to network with different organisations to help her secure employment.

She applied for roles via the Opportunity Lambeth portal and the Wandsworth Work Match opportunities relating to customer service-focused roles, but despite having interviews, she didn’t manage to secure the roles. Through interview support, she began to build on her confidence and focus.

Through applying for roles, Bushra managed to secure a part-time role with Waddon Leisure Centre as a General Assistant, supporting all customers who come into the leisure centre, as well as staff members. She is enjoying the role very much, but Bushra wanted to do more to support and help others. She applied for a voluntary position with Hestia

, who provide support for those experiencing domestic abuse, modern slavery, and mental health needs. Hestia is one of the largest providers of domestic abuse refuges in London and South East and the main organisation supporting victims of modern slavery in the capital.

Due to her role, being part-time; she was able to commit to this and felt the need to give something back from a social impact/value perspective. Connecting Communities was able to support Bushra both personally and professionally from a soft skill and financial view point (travel assistance). Bushra has now been with Waddon Leisure Centre for 6 months and is thoroughly enjoying the role, giving her the flexibility to also support others through her volunteering work.
